Child porn suspect helped FBI expose online predators

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) –

A member of the Occupy Nashville movement went from denying his involvement in child pornography to working with federal agents to expose other child predators.

Cynthia Harvey first exposed Albert Rankin online.

“He’s off the streets. He’s not hurting any children,” Harvey said.

Rankin’s sentencing hearing in federal court on Friday was the latest development in a four-year odyssey that began in Harvey’s south Nashville home.

At the time, she worked for a website called Evil Unveiled, where she tracked child pornography chat rooms and publicly identified child predators who hadn’t been charged.

One of the people profiled was Rankin, a member of the Occupy Nashville movement who often did interviews.

The I-Team began investigating and found similarities between Rankin and a child predator who called himself “Wolfy” online.

Wolfy wrote of being in a tent with Occupy Nashville for 90 days and posted a picture of Rankin from a newspaper, writing, “I look like a boss.”

The I-Team tracked him down in Oklahoma City.

“If this isn’t you, then this person has a whole lot of personal information about you,” chief investigative reporter Jeremy Finley said.

“It’s not hard to emulate somebody if you talk to them for a while,” Rankin replied.

“This person (Wolfy) actually posted pictures of himself,” Finley said. “And these are the pictures that he posted. This is you.”

“Oh yeah, that’s a picture of me,” Rankin said.

“And that’s you,” Finley said, referencing another photograph. “So is this you posting in these chat rooms?”

“Um, no. I’ve put my pictures out all over the internet,” Rankin said.

After the I-Team’s story aired, Rankin was arrested. For year, he said in county jails waiting for his case to proceed.

Friday in court, the I-Team learned while in custody, Rankin spent 300 hours with the FBI working to expose other predators. Rankin’s defense attorney said he also helped identify people and social media accounts associated with ISIS.

While the judge said he had never seen this kind of unprecedented cooperation, he still sentenced Rankin to 52 months in prison.

In court, Rankin apologized and said he didn’t realize how much harm he was causing until he read the victims’ statements.
